Among the Korean cultural heritage is the practice of using potato starch. 

This practice refers to a way of life of the people in the northern alpine region of the DPRK who have farina as a staple. The starch is obtained by grinding properly washed potatoes and soaking the sediment in clear water several times before drying it. 

 Potato began to be cultivated in the Musan area of Hamgyong province located in the northern part of Korea in around 1824 and 1825. It found its way from Ryanggang Province in the northern part to Kangwon Province in the southern part by the 1830s-1840s. 

Horse riding is a sports event to decide who rides faster on horseback and who performs more spectacular stunts on horseback.

The DPRK has a very long history of breeding horse.

Therefore, such proverbs and idioms related to horse as “Old horse knows the way (Wisdom comes with age)” have been passed on among the people.

Celebratory events took place in Russia to mark the 80th anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War.

There was a grand military parade at Red Square in the capital city of Moscow on May 9.

Amid the playing of song “Just War”, the national flag of the Russian Federation and the flag of victory entered the square.

The Mexican president condemned the US for its infringement upon national sovereignty at a press conference on May 9.

Referring to the US’ change of the name of the Gulf of Mexico into the “Gulf of America” in a map as an infringement upon the sovereignty of Mexico, she said that her country brought a suit against the American company related to it.

She stressed that the US can change the names of regions, mountains and lakes in its territory but not that of the Gulf of Mexico.

Staff members of the Russian embassy in Pyongyang laid a wreath at the Liberation Tower on May 9 on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Russia’s victory in the Great Patriotic War.

The honour guards of the Korean People’s Army lined up at the tower.

Present at the wreath-laying ceremony were Alexandr Matsegora, Russian ambassador to the DPRK, his embassy staff members, Russian guests staying in Pyongyang and officials of the DPRK Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other relevant sectors.

The government delegation of the Republic of Belarus led by Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Shuleiko, who visited the DPRK at the invitation of its government, left Pyongyang on May 9 after attending the third meeting of the DPRK-Belarus intergovernmental joint committee for trade and economic cooperation.

They were seen off at Pyongyang International Airport by Paek Hyo Nam, vice-minister of External Economic Relations of the DPRK, and officials concerned.
