New analyser developed

The high-tech products exchange centre of Pyongyang University of Mechanical Engineering has recently developed an analyser of molten cast iron for front furnace.

It has been an established formula for the analysis of molten materials in a metallurgical furnace to gather samples and evaluate the contents of different elements. However, since the state of the furnace should be maintained for a certain time for analysis of the gathered sample in a lab, it requires a great deal of electricity, takes a long time and the components may change in the meantime.

The technology of analysing molten iron for front furnace can deal with such a shortcoming while rapidly and accurately evaluating the melting state of molten iron on the spot.

“It is the current trend of the world to analyse the ingredients of molten materials through a thermal analysis method, before tapping the molten iron, in the production of steel or cast iron, especially spheroidal graphite cast iron,” said Kim Chol Jun, director of the exchange centre.

It is widely known that spheroidal graphite cast iron has excellent mechanical properties and is highly resistant to heat and abrasion since it changes the shape of graphite into round one, unlike common cast iron.

It is important to analyse the spheroidizing rate and contents of carbon and silicon in spheroidal graphite cast iron without delay in front furnace.

Developers newly updated its analysis method and developed a new device for evaluating relevant indices in a quantitative way, including the heat sampling system for accurately detecting the contents of elements contained in test piece of pig iron and the temperature change of analysing objects.

And they solved a technical problem for making a sampling cup by relying on locally-available materials.

According to Kim Yong Jun, lead developer and section chief of the exchange centre, the analyser shortens the time for quantitative analysis of carbon, silicon and other ingredients to less than one tenth as against before and remarkably reduces power consumption for analysis, while hardly making analytical error.

Technicians in relevant sectors highly praise it, saying that it can evaluate the quality of cast-iron products for different uses in a rapid and accurate way as it automatically presents the quantity of supplementary component additives according to analytical results and predicts the spheroidizing rate of graphite.
