Peru declares 90-day emergency over oil spillage

Huge quantities of oil spilt in Callao, Peru, on January 15, causing serious environmental pollution.

The accident occurred during the unloading of an oil truck at an oil refinery located in a coastal area.

As a result, a vast area of the surrounding seaside and reserve for environmental protection was contaminated.

As of January 22, 1 580m3 of contaminated soil was dealt with, but it is said to be still a long way to decontaminate the area.

The government declared a 90-day-long state of environmental emergency in the affected area.
