Natural Monument Tal Gate on Sea Chilbo

April 2, 2024

Unlike Inner Chilbo and Outer Chilbo, Sea Chilbo is a spectacular seaside scenic spot featured by sharp coastline cliffs, a myriad of rocks and a group of islets. The blue water of the East Sea of Korea breaks against the cliffs, tossing up sprays.

There stands a natural monument called Tal Gate on Sea Chilbo.

The arched rock is 10 metres high and the opening is nearly 5 metres wide.

It is a sight to behold when a rising full moon is seen through the natural rock gate.

Legend has it that the moon which rose from the East Sea and hung high over the night would take a rest there enjoying the scenery of Sea Chilbo during the day.

The gate is of great academic significance in studying abrasion caves formed in volcanic areas.
