Nikolai Patrushev, secretary general of the Russian Security Council, criticized the US and NATO at an interview with the newspaper Argumenti I Fakti on April 1.

It is needed to be aware of the history of NATO in order to grasp the essence of the organization which has been a ceaseless root cause of all threats, crises and disputes for many years, he said. Over the past 75 years NATO conducted more than 20 large-scale military operations and was involved in dozens of armed conflicts along with military alliances the US organized around the world, including Vietnam, Iraq, Libya and Afghanistan, in order to realize its global ambition, he disclosed.

He said that the member nations of NATO in Europe had lost a lot of elements of sovereignty a long time ago.

The US and the West have long set it as their strategic goal to lower the status of Russia as a political and economic rival and furthermore to remove the country from the world political map by means of division, he asserted, adding that to this end they defined Russia as the root cause of major threat to European security and directly fixed this in NATO's strategic plan.

He stressed that NATO's all policies are set at the dictates of the US and that NATO under the control of the US is an organization for putting illegal pressure on sovereign states of the world by mobilizing military, economic, information and other resources.
