Chinese representative demands reconsideration of Palestine’s application for UN membership

May 16, 2024

The Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations maintained that the UN Security Council should reconsider the application of Palestine for UN membership in his remarks at an emergency special session of the UN General Assembly on May 10.

Saying that relevant countries should no longer delay accepting Palestine as a UN member and create obstacles to it, he described the establishment of an independent state as a long-cherished desire of the Palestinian people and its formal accession to the UN as a vital step in this historic process.

It is the common responsibility of the international community to support and promote the process of the establishment of the independent state of Palestine and provide a powerful guarantee for implementing the “two-state proposal” and realizing permanent peace in the Middle East, he asserted.

He strongly urged Israel to discontinue the military attack on Rafah and remove all restrictions set on the entry of humanitarian materials into the Gaza Strip.

He stressed that Israel should stop all activities related to settlement in the West Bank and strictly curb the escalating violence by settlers.
