A research team of the Agricultural High-Tech Centre of the Academy of Agricultural Science has developed and introduced the organic food  production system “Paengmi” (white rice) through years of painstaking research and efforts.

In modern agriculture crops grow very fast and produce high yields, but they have high amounts of pesticide residue and a high nitrate content. So the quality of farm products is rated low and they directly threaten human health.

However, organic agricultural products are of high quality and nutritive value, taste fine and have no negative effects on human health.

“The demand for organic agricultural products is steadily increasing as society develops and the people's level of civilization rises,” said director Choe Yong Hui.

The centre, which developed many excellent agricultural sic-tech products in the past, has set the research related to the production of organic agricultural products that meet the organic standards as one of the main research projects. In particular, it concentrates efforts on producing rice, the staple food of the Korean people, by organic farming.

It fixed high-yielding rice seeds of good quality as major crops and selected the right soil for organic farming through the survey of water quality and ecological environment and the analysis of soil. And it improved the soil fertility mainly with microbial and organic fertilizers and established the rational methods of producing organic agricultural products such as boosting the efficiency of weeding and preventing crop damage by blights and harmful insects by means of fish farming in paddies and by releasing ducks into them.

And it completed the design in such a way as to make the whole process of the production, processing and storage of white rice, encompassing modern white rice processing equipment and sorting and vacuum packaging processes, free from pollution and guarantee the nutriological functions and quality of the food products.

The organic food production system “Paengmi” took first place at the advanced science and technology and products exhibition-2024 and the 37th National Science and Technology Festival.

The “Paengmi” products, which obtained organic quality certification, are now popular at the commercial service networks in the country and international commodity exhibitions, and various countries including Russia and China and international organic farming institutions want to develop academic and product exchanges with the Agricultural High-Tech Centre of the Academy of Agricultural Science.

The centre also pays close attention to the exchange of agricultural sci-tech successes and experience and the technical service of organic certification.
