August 3, 2025

An earthquake measuring 8.7 on the Richter Scale hit the waters off the east of Kamchatka, Russia, on July 30.

The earthquake was reportedly the strongest one in the region since 1952.

There were dozens of aftershocks.

A tidal wave 3-4 metres in height hit an area of Kamchatka. A relevant institution demanded that residents there do not approach the seaside and ships evacuate.

A tidal wave warning was issued in the whole of the Kuril Islands, and Sakhalin imposed a state of emergency and evacuated residents to high areas.

As a tidal wave three metres high at maximum was anticipated in the Japanese archipelago, a tidal wave warning was released on the Pacific coast ranging from Hokkaido to Kyushu and an order for evacuation of residents was issued.

An alarm was also sounded to warn of a tidal wave in the west coastal regions of the US including Hawaii, Alaska, Washington, Oregon and California immediately after the occurrence of the earthquake.
