A spokesman for the Indian Foreign Ministry in a statement issued on August 6 stressed the stand to counter the US’ threat to impose tariffs against his country.

The US took issue with India’s oil import from Russia and decided to impose 25 percent additional tariff on Indian goods, the statement said, branding it as an unfair and unreasonable act.

The Indian government has already expressed its clear stand that the import of Russian oil is needed to ensure energy security of its over 1.4 billion population and it will take all measures to protect the interests of the country from the US tariff threat, it added.
