Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, resolutely rejected the impudent allegation of the Japanese foreign minister in a commentary on August 10.

Referring to the fact that the Japanese foreign minister talked about Russia’s “illegal occupation” of the Southern Kuril Islands, she said that this can never be unpardonable as the height of impudence in the run-up to September 3, the 80th anniversary of defeating Japanese militarists and putting an end to WWII.

The Southern Kuril Islands were transferred to the Soviet Union in accordance with the agreement of the Allied Powers and UN Chapter after WWII and later became the territory of the Russian Federation, she said.

It clearly reveals the revanchist attribute of the present Japanese politics that the Japanese authorities are chronically clinging to a false interpretation on the events of the mid-20th century which decided the destiny of humankind, she added.

She disclosed that this country is, in essence, the only one in the world which totally denies the result of the postwar arbitration and tries to nullify many crimes committed by the Japanese army in East Asia in the first half of the 20th century.

She emphasized that before the historic day of September 3, Russia calls on Japan once again to totally recognize its responsibility for the aggressive acts committed in Asia and sincerely apologize for inflicting pains on the peoples of Asian countries.
