Natural monument –Chongbaek juniper

The Chongbaek juniper in Chongbaek-ri, Kumya County, South Hamgyong Province, was planted in around 1550. It is 10 metres tall and 5.4 metres round at the root collar and the crown is 18 metres wide from east to west and 21 metres from north to south.

The trunk splits into three main branches at the height of 0.5 metre and the branches are 2.6m, 2.1m and 2.2m round respectively.

This tree looks like a mass of small clouds when seen at a close distance and a broad umbrella from afar.

The Chongbaek juniper is one of the tallest and oldest trees in the east coastal area and is of significance in studying the size and age of juniper.
