Renewable energy brings benefits
September 26, 2025Efforts are now made to actively develop and use wind, biomass, solar and other energy resources across the DPRK.
A neighbourhood unit of Songyo District in Pyongyang benefits greatly from a solar power generation system it established by itself.
The neighbourhood unit with 50-odd families installed more than 40 solar panels on the rooftop of its apartment house.
“All the families of our neighbourhood unit use electricity produced with solar panels. The electricity is enough to ensure the operation of TVs, refrigerators, air conditioners and other domestic electrical appliances as well as lighting,” said Sin Hyang Hui, head of the neighbourhood unit.
The solar power generation system was invented by Kim Kwang Myong, a graduate student of Pyongyang University of Architecture. He made up his mind to introduce solar energy-based electricity production into not only his home but also the whole neighbourhood unit.
All the residents of the unit supported his mind to contribute to the country by producing much electricity by his own efforts and helped him positively.
He buckled down to the work to develop a digital control system to increase the lifespan of batteries while maximizing the generating efficiency of solar panels.
The multiple general switchboard invented by him stores and manages the electricity produced by solar panels and supplies it to every household. The switchboard not only controls the amount of charge and discharge of batteries automatically and digitally to meet the power loads of households but also manages batteries in a balanced way, thus increasing their lifespan remarkably.
The head of the neighbourhood unit said that the power production based on renewable energy is conducive to the country's economic life and brings substantial benefits for households as it makes it possible to keep ecological environment clean and supply produced electric power into the national power grid to be used effectively.
