International efforts to solve water problem
October 30, 2025Water is an element most essential to the existence of humanity. As the world population increases and the economy develops, the demand for water is further growing.
But water resources that can be used by humans are extremely limited. Fresh water accounts for the extremely small part of the total amount of water stored in the earth and even that continues to decrease due to various factors.
Furthermore, water resources have been rapidly reduced in many countries owing to extremely high temperatures in recent years.
Underground water resources also continue to decrease. According to data available, water volume was drastically reduced in the 37 largest aquifers in the world. They are drying up as there are hardly natural water supplements to them as compared to the quantity of water extracted from them.
Experts insist that the rapid decrease in underground water should not be overlooked any longer.
Water shortage has inflicted severe damage on humanity.
Last year about 3 billion people and large numbers of bread baskets in the world suffered from drought or were in a situation in which they faced the faint possibility of using water.
According to the recent report on the global water resources released by the World Meteorological Organization, abnormal phenomena of excessive increase or decrease in water flow were observed in about 60 percent of river basins in 2024.
Shortly ago, the Kazakh president called for protecting the water resources of the Caspian Sea in his speech at the UN General Assembly. Noting that the water resources of the Caspian Sea are rapidly decreasing, he said that it has already become a warning signal to the world rather than a regional issue. And he insisted that not only the regional countries but also the international community should jointly take emergency measures to protect the water resources of the Caspian Sea.
Many countries are taking measures to protect, economize on and make effective use of water resources. They are implementing a licensing system for the use of water for farming and widely introducing water saving equipment while instilling into people the approach to water saving. Some countries are enacting and implementing a strict law on reprocessing sewage and collecting and using rainwater.
Under the circumstances, different technologies of desalinating seawater by using solar energy are being developed and introduced.
It has become a pressing task directly related to the existence and future of mankind to protect and economize on water resources as much as possible.
