The deputy director of the nonproliferation and arms control department of the Russian Foreign Ministry censured the US and West for their moves for militarizing outer space as he addressed a session of the UN General Assembly on October 27.

He expressed concern over the growing danger that space might be reduced to a bridgehead for aggression and war due to some Western countries’ strategy of deploying weapons in outer space.

The reality in which the US is pushing the “Golden Dome” missile defence plan, whose main content is the overall development of missile defence elements including orbit-based interceptor means, serves as an obvious example, he said, adding that this is pregnant with severe instability of situation and the danger of arms race in outer space.

He insisted on making general regulations on legally making it a duty to forbid the deployment of any weapons in outer space or the use of armed forces against outer space objects in order to prevent arms race in space.
