Public tasting of apple and pear held

November 10, 2025

A public tasting of apples and pears produced on fruit farms across the country this year took place in Pyongyang on October 29.

Apples and pears of different varieties were presented to the event by large-scale fruit production units, including Kwail and Pukchong counties, the Kosan and Taedonggang combined fruit farms and the fruit farms under the Agricultural Commission.

In the tasting, the jury members tasted each of the presented varieties and evaluated the sweetness and sourness, water content, fragrance and other qualities.

The presented items offered a glimpse of the efforts devoted by the fruit production units to improve the taste and increase the production even under this year’s unfavourable weather condition.

Kwail County presented over ten kinds of apples including “Cholryong”, “Sukchon” and “Unnyul” and two kinds of pears which looked nice, big and beautiful in colour.

Apples of “Nurunhwangju” and “Kumgang 4” species and pillar-shaped pear presented by the county won the first place in the tasting for their unrivalled sweetness, acidity, water content and fragrance.

According to an official of the county, their success owes much to the wise leadership of President Kim Il Sung, Chairman Kim Jong Il and General Secretary Kim Jong Un who illuminated the road to be followed by the fruit farm of the county. The President and the Chairman visited Kwail County several times to solve problems arising in fruit production like those of mainly planting fruit varieties favoured by the people, putting the fruit production on a scientific and modern basis and mechanizing the cultivation comprehensively.

Upholding the noble intention of the General Secretary who paid close attention to supplying the people with more tasty and fresh fruits all the year round and created a new history of development in pomiculture, fruit production units across the country have been engaged in a hot competition to improve the taste and quality of fruits this year under the banner of scientific fruit farming.

Fruit farms directed efforts to coping with different kinds of harmful insects like Laspeyresia pyrivora Danilevesky which proliferated explosively and unusually and various kinds of diseases like wilt, while applying much organic fertilizer and thinning fruits in time and in an intensive way so as to remarkably improve the quality of fruits.

Apples from the Onchon Fruit Farm, which collected a markedly good harvest this year, were pleasing to the eye and so were various kinds of fruits of superior species with their own characteristics in colour, size and fragrance.

Apples of “Sukchon” species from the Myonggan Fruit Farm, which are high in yield and quality and have a distinctive fragrance, and pillar-shaped pears of the Onchon Fruit Farm with a max weight of 1.3 kilograms each attracted the interest of experts.

Fruits produced in Pukchong and Kwail counties and the Taedonggang Combined Fruit Farm, the Toksong Apple Farm and the Onchon, Myonggan, Songhan and Anak fruit farms were highly appreciated in the public tasting.
