New textbooks written for implementing second universal 12-year compulsory education programme
November 12, 2025The Educational Books Publishing House is pushing forward with the writing of new textbooks for the second universal 12-year compulsory education programme.
The first universal 12-year compulsory education programme according to school systems has been implemented over the past ten-odd years since the law of the DPRK Supreme People’s Assembly on the enforcement of the universal 12-year compulsory education was adopted at the Sixth Session of the 12th SPA in September 2012.
“The Eighth Plenary Meeting of the Eighth Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea and other plenary meetings put forward the tasks of adjusting the educational structure of the country so that advanced education can be provided and of innovating teaching contents and methods. We made an analysis of textbooks used for the implementation of the first universal 12-year compulsory education programme and mapped out a detailed plan for ensuring scientific accuracy and pedagogical effectiveness of the contents of textbooks and innovating their forms so as to provide the students with education of world advanced level. We are now pressing on with the writing of new textbooks according to the second education programme,” said Paek Yong Chol, department director of the Educational Books Publishing House.
In order to improve the contents of textbooks, the journalists and editors of the publishing house are working to ensure sequence and correlation in teaching contents between school systems of primary schools and junior and senior middle schools.
They are also paying attention to giving theoretical explanation to and setting priority in the contents of new textbooks since the teaching period has shortened due to the extended vacation.
They are channelling efforts into including questions related with practice in teaching materials to help students get a theoretical understanding of teaching contents and writing textbooks for basic technology subjects to help them acquire one or more techniques and skills.
Much improvement has also been made in the method of compiling textbooks in the course of it.
In addition, they are writing reference books to help teachers become well-versed in the objectives and contents of teaching and teach lessons on a high level in keeping with the global trend of educational development.
