November 16 is the founding anniversary of UNESCO.

A meeting of the preparatory committee for founding UNESCO took place in London on November 16 1945, with representatives from 37 countries in attendance. The meeting adopted the UNESCO charter, which came into effect on November 4 1946. UNESCO became a UN specialized agency in December 1946 according to an agreement concluded with the UN.

The objective of its activities is to promote international cooperation in the fields of education, science, culture and public information.

In the field of education, it directs efforts to enhancing the development of education and international understanding through education. In the field of science, it helps its member states work out policies for the development of science and technology, encourages the training of scientists and technicians and promotes international exchanges and cooperation. It also advances social science conducive to building a society where justice, freedom, human dignity and principles of ethics are ensured, while collecting and analysing relevant statistics. In the field of culture, it further improves mutual understanding of culture in different countries and cooperates in the excavation, restoration and management of international cultural heritage.

Embracing over 190 countries as its member states today, UNESCO is making a positive contribution to developing international exchange of information, cultural dissemination, adult education, children’s education and others through TV and newspapers and protecting the cultural heritage of the world.

The organization also publishes books on education, science, culture and public information and various other publications.

Over the past 80 years UNESCO has actively facilitated the progress and development of civilization of humankind through its positive activities.

The DPRK joined UNESCO on October 18 1974. Since then it has strengthened cooperation with the organization and its member states in the fields of education, science, culture and information as a member state.
