December 9, 2025

The sable belonging to the weasel family is 38cm to 53cm long and a male weighs 1kg to 1.5kg and a female 0.7kg to 1kg.

It is similar in appearance to a yellow-throated marten, but it is much smaller than the latter and bigger than a weasel.

It nests under the root of a tree or fallen trees and in piles of stones and is active mainly at night.

It preys mainly on rodents, pika and other small animals and birds. It also eats wild fruits such as wild grapes, fruit of Actinidia arguta, pine nuts and black walnuts.

A female breeds a litter of 1 to 4 younglings.

The ecological environment of the Paegam County area in Ryanggang Province is favourable for the inhabitation of sables.

It has dense forests with Korea larch, Abies nephrolepis, spruce and other needle-leaf trees of the subarctic zone as the main species and a mixture of broad-leaved trees such as white birch and Erman's birch grow along some valleys.
