UN should contribute to world peace and security
January 7, 2026Many countries are raising their voice in calling for the UN to fulfil its responsibility and role in ensuring global peace and security.
The Mexican president criticized the UN for failing to play a proper role in preventing conflicts and bloodshed amid the regional situation inching close to the brink of war due to the US military pressure on Venezuela. Although Washington is resorting to naval blockade and military pressure on Venezuela, the UN is indifferent to the Venezuelan situation and has not taken any measure, she said, urging the UN to play its role.
The Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) noted that the Israeli army deliberately and persistently attacked civilians in the Gaza Strip, resulting in more than 400 deaths in two months after the conclusion of the truce agreement, but the international community remains surprisingly silent and takes no measures.
As already known, the US is concentrating huge armed forces in the Caribbean and steadily intensifying the pressure on Venezuela under the pretext that its government is involved in terrorism, drug trafficking, human trafficking and other criminal acts. The Venezuelan president asserted that the massive deployment of the US forces in the Caribbean is part of its plan to overthrow the government of the country and deprive it of its rich oil resources under the signboard of anti-drug operations.
In this regard, the Venezuelan foreign minister sent a letter to the UN Security Council accusing the US of capturing an oil tanker in the Caribbean.
Russia, China, Iran and other countries are also supporting the stand of Venezuela defending its independent rights and interests, as they condemn the US’ threat and blackmail against the country. However, no relevant measure has been taken to hasten the settlement of the Venezuelan crisis in the UN arena.
The situation in the Gaza Strip is even worse.
The humanitarian disaster in Gaza is getting gloomier day by day as the Israeli forces are blocking the access of ambulances and medical teams while launching military attacks on refugees.
Although Israel’s attack on schools and refugee camps is a wanton violation of international humanitarian law, the international community and the UN organizations do not take urgent measures to protect civilians and ensure the security of refuges and humanitarian activists.
The UN, which takes sovereign equality, peaceful settlement of disputes and non-interference in other’s internal affairs as its basic principle of activities, should be faithful to its mission and principle.
