Natural monument—Ginkgo at Anguk Temple

January 14, 2026

It grows at the Anguk Temple in Phyongsong City, South Phyongan Province.

The tree was planted in a bid to add beauty to the landscape of the temple in 503, when it was built, during the Koguryo dynasty (277 BC-AD 668).

It is over 30m tall and 11m and 9m round at the root neck and the chest height respectively. Its crown is 24m wide from east to west and 19.5m wide from north to south.

Its lower part is so thick as to take several people to encircle it with outstretched arms and its roots spread deep under the ground.

As a typical drooping ginkgo, it is of great academic significance.
