January 14 marked the 67th anniversary of the founding of the Worker-Peasant Red Guards.

President Kim Il Sung adhered to it as a consistent principle to realize self-defence of the country by arming all the people on the basis of the brilliant tradition established in the flames of the anti-Japanese war.

Saying that it was very important to arm all the people while strengthening the Korean People’s Army in order to ensure the security of the country and people and further build up the defence capability of the country, the President saw that the former People's Self-Defence Corps was reorganized into the more developed Worker-Peasant Red Guards.

As a result, the Worker-Peasant Red Guards were founded on January 14 1959.

The President strengthened and developed the paramilitary force into a powerful revolutionary armed force, which was prepared politically, ideologically and in military technique and capable of annihilating the enemy at one blow independently in any place, whether they invaded the country from the sky, ground or sea, as well as carrying out close combined operations with the Korean People’s Army.

True to the intention of the President, Chairman Kim Jong Il wisely led the work of the Worker-Peasant Red Guards.

He always noted that the paramilitary force constitutes an important component part of the revolutionary armed forces together with the People’s Army and laid down the guidelines for boosting the country’s paramilitary force on September 7 2008.

In September 2011, he saw the parade of the Worker-Peasant Red Guards held in celebration of the 63rd founding anniversary of the DPRK and expressed his firm conviction that the red guards, which inherited the brilliant revolutionary traditions of the anti-Japanese armed struggle, would as ever fulfil their mission and duty as the revolutionary armed force faithful to the revolutionary cause of Juche.

General Secretary Kim Jong Un clarified the important tasks to be tackled by the Worker-Peasant Red Guards and puts his heart and soul into making sure that the country’s paramilitary force would usher in a golden age of its development.

He sent a letter to the participants in the Sixth Meeting of Active Leading Personnel of the Worker-Peasant Red Guards in August 2022 and energetically led the work of the red guards so that they could intensify their training to get themselves fully ready to cope with the aggressive moves of the enemy at any time.

In the parade of the paramilitary force held in celebration of the 75th founding anniversary of the DPRK in September 2023 the parade columns fully demonstrated the pride and self-confidence of all the working people in fulfilling their sacred mission and duty on the two fronts of national defence and socialist construction and the will to take up arms in case of emergency to annihilate the enemy.

The DPRK has turned into a more impregnable fortress thanks to the Worker-Peasant Red Guards which have consolidated the all-people and nationwide defence system together with the Korean People’s Army.
