Island of science gives vibrancy to whole country
January 19, 2026On New Year’s Day ten years ago, the inauguration ceremony of the Sci-Tech Complex was held in splendour in the presence of the respected General Secretary
The Korean people still remember how the complex was built.
In June 2014, the respected General Secretary looked round the dusty island, saying that in order to make the country leap forward by dint of science and technology and turn it into a country full of talents in the near future, there should be a hub of sci-tech dissemination. And he named the hub to be built there “Sci-Tech Complex”.
Later in February 2015, he visited the construction site despite the mid-winter cold and gave instructions on building the complex into a structure epitomizing the Workers’ Party of Korea’s idea of attaching importance to science and technology and impeccable in terms of architectural aesthetics and practicability and a “dear home” that all people can freely visit to acquire science and technology to their heart’s content.
The complex was successfully completed as a monumental edifice in a short span of time.
It is monumental not only because it was built in a distinctive style at an excellent place in the middle of the Taedong River.
Its composition and content are also monumental as a house of learning representing the world’s science and civilization.
The multi-functional base for disseminating modern science and technology and hub of information exchange provides real-time service to scientific research and educational institutions, factories and enterprises and households across the country. The complex keeps a comprehensive and systematic database that stores in PDF format latest sci-tech achievements in the country and advanced sci-tech data from foreign countries as well as sci-tech books published in the past.
True to the instructions of the General Secretary that the Sci-Tech Complex should not be a “pond with stagnant water” but a hub of dissemination for constantly circulating sci-tech information and that it is not an exhibition hall but a large e-library, it was built into a place where people can go through the past and present of the science in the world and the civilization based on science and technology created by mankind and also get a glimpse into the future.
Over the past ten years since the Sci-Tech Complex was built as a great temple of learning for all people in the 21st century and a centre for disseminating latest science and technology, Mirae e-libraries and sci-tech learning spaces have been put up in different regions and units across the country, laying a foundation for making a leap forward by dint of science. And many working people have become intelligent workers who contribute to the production and development of their factories and enterprises by implementing new technical innovation plans and creative ideas.
The Sci-Tech Complex is a house of learning conducive to making all people well versed in science and technology, and the island where it is situated is the one of science which gives vibrancy to the whole country.
