Hungary sues EU for banning import of Russian energy
February 9, 2026Hungary brought a legal action to the European Court of Justice on February 2 in protest against the decision of the European Union which totally prohibited the import of Russian-made energy.
The Hungarian minister of foreign affairs and trade said through an SNS that the decision of the EU is threatening the energy security of his country, stressing that Hungary’s safe energy storage cannot be guaranteed unless there is the supply of Russian energy.
This decision infringes upon the EU member states’ rights to energy sources, he added.
In late January, the European Council adopted a decision on finally approving the ban on the import of the Russian-made gas from 2027.
