Natural monument—Sangwonam ginkgo

February 10, 2026

The Sangwonam ginkgo is a staminate tree in the front yard of Sangwon Hermitage belonging to the Pohyon Temple in Mt Myohyang.

It stands alongside the Myohyangsan pine tree, another natural monument.

It is said that the seedling of the ginkgo was planted and grown by a monk who lived there in around 1895.

The trunk has cracks and the bark is light grey.

As the tree grows at the highest place among the ginkgos living in the DPRK, it is of great significance in the study of the limit of vertical distribution of this species.
