February 27, 2026Dmitri Peskov, the Russian president’s press secretary, referred to Russia-Japan relations at a press conference on February 20.
He said that the relations between Russia and Japan are zero at present, asserting that it is impossible to discuss the issue of peace treaty without dialogue.
Russia has never supported the breakdown of such dialogue and the dialogue was suspended at the initiative of Japan, he noted.
Saying that Japan is taking an unfriendly attitude towards Russia, he stressed that it is impossible to conclude a peace treaty with Japan unless there is a change in the mood of the bilateral relations.
