Sci-tech achievements conducive to economic development
Exhibition of sci-tech achievements in different sectors of the national economy-2025 held

The exhibition of sci-tech achievements in different sectors of the national economy-2025, which opened in late December last year, went on till February 27 at the Three-Revolution Exhibition House in Pyongyang.

On display at the exhibition on the theme of "Era of prosperity advancing on the strength of science and technology" were a large number of sci-tech achievements made by many sectors and units of the national economy, including the sectors of metallurgical, chemical, electric power and machine-building industries, agriculture, light industry and fishing industry, during the five-year plan for national economic development.

With domestic resources and technology

What were noticeable at the exhibition were the sci-tech achievements made by relying on the country’s resources and technology.

The metallurgical industry sector established a high-grade manganese concentrate production process capable of raising both the grade of concentrate and the actual extraction rate while reducing the production cost by using locally-available low-grade wad.

The floating preheating-style oxygen heat blast furnace, introduced into the Kim Chaek and Hwanghae iron and steel complexes, drew the attention of people as it can save anthracite and oxygen while increasing productivity as compared to ordinary oxygen blast furnaces.

The chemical industry sector made an achievement conducive to putting the production of the catalyst for polypropylene plastic production on a Juche basis. “The fourth-generation catalyst, a carrier-style catalyst, is being produced only in a few countries with the developed chemical industry in the world as it requires high-purity raw materials and advanced manufacturing techniques. The fourth-generation propylene polymerization catalyst we have developed is made from domestic raw materials and superior to previously used catalyst in action,” said Maeng Thae Won, head of an office of Kim Il Sung University.

The new crystal thenardite production process established at the December 5 Youth Mine, which uses locally-abundant glauberite, was built at one go and completely by the Korean scientists with their own efforts and technology, ranging from conception to design, building, installation and trial run of facilities.

The Ryongnam Dockyard established a new welding rod production process which ensures a high proportion of the domestic production of equipment and raw materials and which is helpful to the qualitative and quantitative growth of production, and the Port of Nampho made a container crane which helps increase cargo storage and traffic capacities, with a less manufacturing cost. These research findings enjoyed popularity among visitors.

Also attracting the interest of the visitors were various kinds of other sci-tech achievements including the establishment of a lead smelting process based on a rotary kiln-electric furnace method and a production process for putting the production of lighting appliances on a Juche basis.

By creating new and advanced things

Also noteworthy at the exhibition were new, advanced and innovative sci-tech achievements of a Korean style.

The Central Mining Research Institute under the State Academy of Sciences developed in a Korean way a pneumatic-mechanical flotation machine capable of turning the dressing plants into energy-, land- and labour-saving ones while increasing their processing capacities.

The technical group of the Hungnam Fertilizer Complex provided a sure guarantee for increased fertilizer production by optimizing the ammonia synthesis process and remodelling the condensation and separation tower. The Electric Power Information Institute under the Ministry of Electric Power Industry established a national integrated power control system to make a rational use of the country's electric power resources, thus making a great contribution to stepping up the modernization of the electric power industry.

The Sangwon Cement Complex increased its production capacity by combining various production processes in keeping with the world trend of cement production and put the cement industry on a modern, IT and scientific basis by establishing a distributed control system for production processes.

The machine-building industry sector upgraded the Kumsong Tractor Factory and other machine factories and made lots of sci-tech achievements in the production of materials, tools, machine elements and equipment parts.

The agricultural sector concentrated efforts on providing a scientific and technological guarantee for the sustainable growth and long-term development of agriculture and thus newly bred and introduced dozens of high-yielding crop varieties and made a positive contribution to agricultural production.

The Pyongyang Wheat Flour Processing Factory set up a new technical process of a Korean style capable of producing high-quality dried yeast by selecting a yeast strain suitable for the production of dried yeast and establishing a method of preserving spores.

The Pyongyang advanced biotechnology development company of Kim Chaek University of Technology developed and produced phytosine, a physiological activator, and solved sci-tech problems arising in introducing it into various sectors of the national economy. Phytosine has proved effective not only in agricultural production but also in livestock farming, fishing industry, sericulture, forestry, public health and other sectors.

“The exhibition served as a watershed for our scientists and technicians to broaden their horizons and visions, seek the ways to further enhance the attraction of science and technology in the new course of development of the next stage and redouble their zeal for competition,” said Ri Jong Chol, section chief of the State Commission of Science and Technology.
