Landscaping pushed in rural residential areas

March 10, 2026

According to data available, well over 70 000 tall trees of dozens of species including zelkova, Korean spruce and white birch have so far been planted in well over a thousand new rural villages across the DPRK this year.

The respected General Secretary Kim Jong Un, who set it as one of the main criteria for modern rural communities to make rural villages urbanized, modern and advanced, stressed last year the need to plant large numbers of trees of good species around rural dwelling houses so as to landscape all the residential areas.

The rural construction sector worked out a plan to plant tall trees of good species and high ornamental value, each of which is over 8-10 metres tall and over 5-6 metres wide at the crown, in all new rural villages built since 2022 and is pushing ahead with its implementation.

Pyongyang Municipality and North Hamgyong and North Phyongan provinces have planted tall trees in a concentrated way to landscape the new rural villages on a high level.

Beautiful landscapes are being created in the new rural villages in Ryokpho and Sadong districts of Pyongyang.

Cities, counties and districts of North Hamgyong Province, including Hoeryong City, Kyongsong County, Chongam District of Chongjin City and Onsong County, have ensured that the landscapes of the rural villages can be preserved even in winter by reasonably determining the ratio of tall evergreen coniferous trees and broad-leaved trees.

The counties of Kujang, Tongchang, Changsong, Unsan and Taegwan and other areas in North Phyongan Province are stepping up the planned tree planting at the final stage, as tall tree planting is underway in such a way as to finish it at one farm or village after another.

South Hwanghae Province has sent officials and landscape architects to the sites to push ahead with the landscaping of the rural villages, while strictly complying with the sci-tech requirements arising in digging up, transporting and planting trees.
