Char in Lake Chon a living monument
March 12, 2026In the City of Samjiyon of Ryanggang Province there is Mt Paektu, which stands 2 750m above sea level.
Various kinds of microorganisms came into being in the water of Lake Chon on the mountain with the passage of long time, but there was no fish in it with no watercourse flowing into it.
In July 1960 ichthyologists of the DPRK put in the lake chars from the Tuman River and goldfish from Lake Samji for the first time. Later they put various other kinds of fish in it several times to acclimatize them to its severe weather and climatic conditions and the ecological environment peculiar to it.
Afterwards, the chars living in the lake were called Chonjisanchono (Salvelinus malma chonjiensis).
The fish is usually 40-50cm long, 85cm at the maximum, and weighs about 0.5kg, or 7.7kg at the maximum, being incomparably bigger than the ordinary char.
As a strong fierce fish with slight feeding preference, it preys on all sorts of insects, ground insects blown off by the wind and even small birds.
Females spawn along the shore of the lake in September and October, and a female usually lays 600-700 eggs, over 1 000 eggs at the maximum.
The fish is of great academic significance as it is distributed in the highest place in the south of the Eurasian continent among the habitats of the same species.
