White-naped crane at Ryongyon is a bird under protection, which winters in a large area of wetland in Ryongyon County from mid-November to late March of the following year.

The crane is about 120cm long and weighs 5-7kg.

The head and neck are white and the body is grey, and the grey part gradually narrows up the neck and turns into thin lines below the eyes.

The exposed skin in front of the eyes is red and the beak is light green.

The bird feeds mainly on fallen cereals, grass roots like those of pondweed and insects as well.

The wetland in Ryongyon County is a wintering place or stopover for not only cranes but also swans.

White-naped crane nests on the ground in the northern region around April and a female lays two light brown eggs with dark brown spots.
