Algeria blames France for nuclear disaster
May 8, 2026The Algerian ambassador to the United Nations at a recent international meeting condemned France, the former suzerain state, for the crime of bringing a nuclear disaster to his country.
He disclosed that France did nuclear tests 17 times within the territory of his country before and after its achievement of independence in the 1960s.
Although sufferers from congenital diseases appeared around the testing area, France has refused to reveal the correct test site and provided no information necessary for the improvement of environment or public hygiene, he said.
Noting that the French authorities are making efforts for decontamination and so on in French Polynesia, where a similar test was done after Algeria, but are refusing a proposal for decontamination in Algeria, he stressed that it can never be justified.
