South African president demands reparations for West’s slavery and colonial exploitation

May 8, 2026

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on May 4 demanded reparations for the slavery and colonial exploitation by the West.

Over the past centuries, the Western powers have made millions of Africans slaves, raked up a huge mount of wealth in the vast lands of Africa by inhumanely abusing them and even took away many cultural relics, he exposed.

The African countries are still suffering from constant economic losses, pains and burden of debts due to the cruel colonial rule and systematic exploitation, he said, adding that Western countries should definitely make reparations for their crimes.

Reparations should be made not merely by financial compensation but by positive investment, dissemination of technologies and skills and unconditional return of stolen cultural relics, so that Africa can clear its debts and attain its development goals, he said.
