Russian FM clarifies stand on Russia-Japan relations

May 12, 2026

The Russian Foreign Ministry made clear its principled stand on the Russia-Japan relationship on May 4.

It asserted that as Japan is stepping up militarization and scaling up its military and technical assistance to the Ukrainian authorities, the bilateral relations have regressed to those of decades ago.

It added that the Japanese authorities should take the detailed steps of abandoning their policy hostile towards Russia in order to resume contacts between the two countries.

After Russia started the special military operations in 2022, Japan joined the anti-Russia sanctions moves of the US and the West, driving the bilateral relations to the worst phase.
