Natural monument—Cornels at Pukchong
May 21, 2026The trees are four cornels growing in Pongui-ri, Pukchong County, South Hamgyong Province.
They were planted in around 1934.
They are 6.5 metres tall on average, and 1.5 metres round at the root neck. The crown is 7 metres wide from east to west and 5 metres from north to south.
Small yellow umbellar flowers open in groups of 20 to 30 earlier than leaves in around April and May.
They fruit and grow well.
The fruits are elliptical nuts and ripen turning red in around August and September.
Cornels are planted in parks or gardens for landscaping and the fruits are used as medicinal materials.
Cornels at Pukchong were designated as a natural monument for their academic significance because they grow in the northernmost part of the country far beyond the limit of natural distribution of the species.
