Eighty years of Korean Children’s Union

June 5, 2026

June 6 this year marks the 80th founding anniversary of the Korean Children’s Union.

President Kim Il Sung, who had paid close attention to the children’s movement since the anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle, founded the Korean Children’s Union, a mass organization of Korean children, in the year after Korea’s liberation.

The task facing the Korean Children’s Union is to train all children to be the revolutionaries of a Juche type who will shoulder the revolutionary cause of Juche and the pillars of socialist construction who are knowledgeable, morally sound, physically strong and developed in all aspects.

The President, who spared no investment for children with a noble view on them, the future, established a universal free education system for the first time in the world and showed them warm love and solicitude as he ensured that all the schoolchildren across the country were provided with new school uniforms.

The Korean people still remember the benevolent image of President Kim Il Sung who sent a congratulatory message to the participants in the Fifth Congress of the KCU in June 1994, the last year of his great life, and had a photo taken with them.

Chairman Kim Jong Il put it forward as an important undertaking related to the future of the revolution to bring up the younger generation and firmly safeguarded the bright smile and happiness of children with the arms of Songun even in the period when the country had to undergo hardships.

The respected fatherly Marshal Kim Jong Un made sure that the anniversary of the KCU was celebrated with splendour every year and, though he was so busy, personally attended a congress of the KCU members, made a speech and had a photo taken with them, wishing them a bright future.

He always put the policy for the rising generation as the top priority among state policies and saw that children’s camps and palaces were built splendidly. He is making great efforts to provide schoolchildren with new uniforms, shoes, bags and school things though everything is in short supply and difficult.

The 80-year history of the KCU is also a proud course in which the ideological and spiritual world of its members has been steadily developed.

Over the past 80 years, the KCU members have creditably lived up to their pledge made before the KCU flag, realizing the preciousness of their country.

The KCU members across the country, who grew more in mind than in physique, displayed many virtuous and commendable traits of devoting their all to society, the collective and comrades, leaving deep impressions on the people.

It is the proud reality in the DPRK today that all KCU members are growing up to be revolutionary talents who will glorify socialist Korea while studying hard with high ambitions and ideals, training their bodies and minds and conducting various socio-political activities and do-good-thing movements.
