China calls for containing Japan’s ‘new-type militarism’

June 8, 2026

A spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry expressed serious concern over the gravity of Japan’s “new-type militarism” affecting the world at a press conference on June 1.

While recklessly pushing forward its remilitarization, Japan is conducting frequent exchanges with military organizations outside the region, expanding the scope of the Self-Defense Forces’ activities and establishing an operation system which can be applied to an actual war, he said.

He disclosed that this is contrary to the appearance of a “pacifist state” which the Japanese side has pretended to be as it is a challenge to the postwar international order in violation of the principles of “exclusive defense” and so on.

Saying that Japan’s “new-type militarism” which is building up its forces has become a source of trouble and is threatening regional peace and stability, he called on the international community to sharpen vigilance against it and resolutely contain it.
