WMO calls for getting ready to cope with El Nino
June 10, 2026The secretary-general of the World Meteorological Organization on June 2 called for making preparations to cope with violent El Nino.
He noted that conditions for El Nino to occur owing to the rise in sea water temperature are developing in the tropical Pacific and that there is an increasing danger that extreme weather would last for several months.
El Nino will increase the danger of heat waves both in continents and oceans, he said, stressing that it is vital in saving people’s lives and reducing damage to establish an accurate weather forecasting and early warning system.
