Korean-style prefabricated construction method established
June 17, 2026A research group of the architectural science institute of Pyongyang University of Architecture has recently established a Korean-style prefabricated construction method and widely introduced it into the construction of houses.
“We have completed a Korean-style prefabricated construction method which is convenient and simple in construction and saves labour and materials,” said Kim Pong Uk, section chief of the institute.
Their prefabricated construction method has a built-up monolithic reinforced concrete wall structure which integrates prefab walls and floor slabs by welding the joints and laying concrete there.
It is characteristic of the method that the vertical steel bars of the prefab walls are not connected at the slab level but firmly connected through vertical joints. It is simple in the assembly of prefab elements as it does not use metal bush and high strength mixture for connecting the vertical steel bars of the prefab walls.
And it does not need reinforced concreting on the prefab slabs, but links them with each other with discontinuous joints.
It is said that in the world the precast concrete slab structure ensures the resistance against earthquake by way of assembling slabs, arranging steel bars over them and then laying concrete there.
But the research group of Pyongyang University of Architecture offers it full resistance against earthquake by correctly estimating the force acting between slabs and arranging joints at regular intervals.
The method saved reinforcement bars and mixture needed for additional concreting and markedly reduced the weight of buildings.
The newly completed prefabricated construction method was introduced into the construction of apartment houses in the Hwasong area and fully proved to be advantageous.
