‘A drop of humanity. Give blood. Save lives’

June 18, 2026

June 14 is World Blood Donor Day.

It is the birthday of a winner of the Nobel Prize for Medicine and Physiology who made a remarkable contribution to the history of blood transfusion by discovering the blood types of A, B and O for the first time in the world.

Amid the growing global interest in safe transfusion, the World Health Organization, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Federation of Blood Donor Organizations and the International Society of Blood Transfusion jointly commemorated World Blood Donor Day for the first time in Johannesburg, South Africa, on June 14 2004.

In response to it, the 58th session of the World Health Assembly held in 2005 set June 14 as World Blood Donor Day and adopted a resolution on commemorating the day every year.

The celebration of the day is aimed at thanking those who voluntarily donated blood, the source of life, raising public awareness of the necessity of blood donation and motivating larger numbers of people to voluntarily donate blood.

It is also aimed at encouraging blood donors to adopt a correct and healthier lifestyle.

However, many countries are now facing a variety of difficulties in transfusion service due to lack of blood supply, problems of its quality and safety, etc.

The timely provision of necessary blood gives those in jaws of death hope and guarantee for life.

Numerous people have willingly donated their blood for others in the DPRK where people’s lives are valued most.

Not only doctors and nurses but other people from all walks of life regard donating their blood for dying patients as a civic duty and pride and worth of life.

Noble virtues and traits of helping and leading one another forward are so commonplace in the whole society as it overflows with love and affection for people.

The blood transfusion sector works to increase the production of blood and blood products whose safety is fully guaranteed by improving the quality of experiments and tests while bettering service for blood donors.

The slogan of this year’s World Blood Donor Day is “A drop of humanity. Give blood. Save lives.”
