Thick forests of economic value stretch far and wide in the areas between Hoean Railway Station in Pukchang County and Namdok Railway Station in the City of Tokchon, South Phyongan Province.

They cover the areas of Husonyu Peak and Mt Jangan with the Taedong River meandering through the coal fields in between, presenting a beautiful natural scene.

In the mountains of these areas there are excellent tree nurseries in forests, and the 0.7 hectare-wide one in the area of Husonyu Peak produces over 200 000 saplings of good tree species a year. And those in the area of Mt Jangan also provide a firm foundation for ensuring successes in the afforestation of the region.

In the course of the introduction of a rational planting method of mixed forests many useful species of trees took root in the high and low mountains of the Husonyu Peak area including pine nut, oak, chestnut and wild-walnut trees.

The forest of oil-bearing trees yields nearly three times more pine nuts and other fruits than previously, bringing considerable benefits to the economic growth of the county, and a large quantity of timber produced from the timber forest is also used effectively.

Wild fruit trees are heavily loaded with fruits including acorns every year, adding to the pleasure of the local people.

The mixed forest in the area is planted by a rational method in a far-sighted way to suit the commensal relations of trees, weather and soil conditions in the relevant areas, purpose of planting forests and others.

Pine nut, wild-walnut and other species of trees are grown together according to their specific characters to create favourable conditions for growth and forests are planted with various kinds of trees to prevent damage from landslide and flash flood, increasing their water storage capacity and keeping soil from acidification.

These achievements are the results of the patriotic efforts of officials and working people in the region who put their heart and soul into afforestation.
