‘Our home is best’

“Our home is the best”—this is what every inhabitant of the workers’ hostel at the Sariwon Textile Mill says.

One October day last year, the hostellers of the mill moved into the newly-built workers’ hostel.

That day, officials of not only the factory but also the province visited the hostel to congratulate the hostellers and the whole factory was wrapped in a festive mood.

Most of its employees are women and many girls live in the hostel.

That is why providing the hostellers with good living conditions had always been a focus of attention of the factory’s officials, an issue to which precedence is given over production.

Accordingly, the hostel was renovated several times, and it was given a total facelift last year.

“Our hostel is wonderful both inside and outside. It is smart and cosy and has all conditions for living,” said Mun Un Sun, one of the hostellers.

The new seven-storey hostel is fully provided with living conditions to ensure the convenience of hostellers, including a dining hall, library, cooking practice room and laundry as well as rooms.

Girls, who love music, spend a pleasant time singing and dancing at a hall on every floor in the evening after a day’s work and on holidays and those who love reading visit the library when they have leisure time.

Sim Kyong Sil, a keeper of the hostel, said that on girls’ birthdays there are birthday parties associated with the sincerity of its officials followed by girls’ singing and dance parties.

The hostellers include over 100 girls who volunteered to work at the factory after graduating from middle schools for orphans.

Though different in appearance, age and character, they are energetic and full of hope alike. They increase production as they always operate their machines in high spirits.

It is because all the officials of the factory, including its manager, take care of all the girls with parental affection.

“Whenever people praise us officials for splendidly renovating the hostel of our factory, we feel ashamed. It is the intention of the Workers’ Party of Korea to give precedence to the health and life of workers over production and we only tried to be true to it,” said Kim Yong Chol, manager of the factory.
