Russia decides to close down Romanian consulate general

July 1, 2026

Russia has recently made a decision to close down the consulate general of Romania in St Petersburg.

The Russian Foreign Ministry called the Romanian ambassador to the country to deliver a memorandum on declaring the Romanian consul general in St Petersburg persona non grata and closing the consulate general.

The Foreign Ministry noted that it was a countermeasure against the unfounded behaviour of Romania that stopped the activities of the Russian consulate general in Constanta and declared the Russian consul general persona non grata.

In May, a drone fell on the roof of an apartment building in Romania and its government placed the responsibility on Russia.
