News of teqball competition
July 3, 2026The 2026 teqball competition began on June 11 at the Pyongyang Municipal Sports Village in the middle of the Pothong River.
The sport has sparked growing public interest since the DPRK players made their international debut and were successful last April.
The gymnasium of the Pyongyang Municipal Sports Village, the venue for the teqball competition, had a full house from the first day of the sports event.
The Teqball Association of the DPRK hosted the round-robin competition, which brought together dozens of players from the Pyongyang, Rimyongsu, Ministry of Light Industry and other sports clubs. It was played, divided into the team event, doubles and singles.
It started with the team event on June 11.
In the first day matches the Kim Jong Thae Electric Locomotive Complex team beat the Rimyongsu team 3-2 and the Ministry of Light Industry team defeated the Pyongyang team 3-0.
“Teqball has its own charms. The speed of the game is fast and players play with the ball like a juggler. I hope it would become a popular sport in the future,” said a sports fan after seeing the matches.
The Ministry of Light Industry team won the team event held until June 13 by beating all the rivals, followed by the Kim Jong Thae Electric Locomotive Complex team.
“Though it was not successful in the team event, the Pyongyang team is a strong one in the country. It won the team event and mixed doubles of teqball at the 14th National People's Games last year and the 2026 Spring National Sports Festival. Unfortunately, some players failed to participate in the team event of the recent competition due to injury. We are looking forward to the future games," said Pak Kun Yong, an official concerned.
The tight competition went on till June 23.
The winners of the women’s doubles were the pair of Cha Sol Gyong and Jon Son Yong of the Ministry of Light Industry team. The pair of Han Song and Kim Il Sin and that of Han Song and Song Rim Song of the Pyongyang team won first place in the mixed doubles and men’s doubles respectively. Kim Il Sin of the Pyongyang came first in the women’s singles and Jo Jun Min of the Rimyongsu in the men’s singles.
