The DPRK is ushering in a new era of comprehensive national development as it advances along the road it chose under the uplifted banner of self-reliance.

In his important concluding speech made at the Ninth Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea, the respected General Secretary Kim Jong Un said that the country’s ideals, goals and advancing speed constantly change and develop, but the ideals of “The people are god”, single-hearted unity and self-reliance, peculiar to the Korean revolution, remain unchanged and their inexhaustible might will confidently propel the country’s socialist construction towards a bright future.

Self-reliance has always served as the banner of struggle and motive power of leap forward throughout the historical course of the DPRK’s cause.

Over the past five years, too, the Korean people pushed ahead with the technical upgrading and readjustment and reinforcement of all sectors of the national economy and put the overall economy on a definite growth track, while implementing the WPK’s strategy of readjustment and reinforcement by dint of self-sustenance and self-support.

The officials and workers of the Kim Chaek and Hwanghae iron and steel complexes established their iron production systems based on local efforts, technology, raw materials and fuel under the banner of self-reliance and the Hungnam Fertilizer Complex set up the melamine resin production line, catalyst production base and slow effective granular urea fertilizer production line relying on domestic resources and technology.

The fighting spirit of self-reliance was also displayed in the machine-building industry sector.

The Sixth Plenary Meeting of the Eighth Central Committee of the WPK held in December 2022 discussed an important issue of providing large compressors, which was the key to fertilizer production.

The question was whether to import modern machinery and equipment needed for readjusting and reinforcing large-scale fertilizer production bases with a huge amount of money or to build them by domestic efforts.

At that time the General Secretary regarded it as not merely a matter of science and technology or practical production but as a crucial political issue of firmly carrying forward the ideal and tradition of self-reliance associated with the lifetime intention of President Kim Il Sung and Chairman Kim Jong Il and strengthening the driving force of the Korean revolution, and entrusted the task of manufacturing the major custom-built equipment to the workers of the Ryongsong Machine Complex.

Encouraged by his trust, the workers of Ryongsong turned out as one in the production of large compressors, smashing defeatism and mysticism about technology that idolize foreign technologies instead of believing in their own strength.

In November 2023, the General Secretary visited the complex which was pushing ahead with the production of high-performance large compressors at the final stage. He looked round the compressors, the products of the revolutionary spirit of self-reliance and fortitude displayed by the Ryongsong workers and the mass technical innovation they made, and said that the whole country should learn from the spirit of advance and fighting mettle mounting in Ryongsong.

The workers of the Sangwon Cement Complex expanded their production capacity by their own efforts and technology and steadily increased cement production to inject vitality into the all-people general advance for socialist construction for the past five years.

They raised the cement production onto a level far surpassing the maximum production capacity with the Eighth Congress of the WPK as the starting point, and exceeded the peak year level year after year, displaying the might of self-reliance and self-development.

The people in Kangwon Province completed the construction of six hydropower stations including the Hoeyang Army-People Power Station during the term of the Eighth Party Central Committee as planned, thus laying a solid foundation for the province to live by its own efforts.

In his policy speech at the First Session of the 15th Supreme People’s Assembly of the DPRK, Comrade Kim Jong Un said that the past decade clearly showed that no objective conditions and circumstances can ever check the advance of a state and people that have turned out in the struggle to shape their future, united as one with firm faith, and that the most correct way to prosperity is to achieve self-reliance and self-sufficiency.
