Orphaned children grow at home of happiness

July 15, 2026

Thanks to the boundless love of the Workers’ Party of Korea, the students at Pyongyang Middle School for Orphans are growing up to be pillars of the country.

Sweet home of orphans

The dormitory of the school, the cosy home of orphaned children, is lavishly equipped for their cultured life and welfare with soft bedding, wardrobes filled with clothes for all seasons, distinctive bookcases, desks and chairs placed in the sunny rooms.

Every year, they receive new clothes, shoes, bags and other school things, confectionery and fruits of every season from the state.

In the dormitory, extracurricular teachers take care of students’ life devoting motherly affections to them. They sign on their homework books instead of their mothers and wash and mend their clothes so that they always look neat and clean.

The doctors of the school pay special attention to their health lest they should get ill.

The cooks make delicious foods for them at every meal according to the nutrition norms and prepare birthday spreads on their birthdays.

That is why they call Pyongyang Middle School for Orphans their sweet home.

Into pillars of country, competent talents

“The teachers of the school are working with genuine sincerity to raise the students competently true to the instructions of the respected General Secretary Kim Jong Un that the orphans should grow up to be famous scientists, athletes, artistes, soldiers and even heroes,” said principal Kim Un.

During the lessons and extracurricular group activities, the teachers carefully watch the children to discover their innate gifts and talents.

Under the guidance of Sim Hak Song, chief of the natural science department, Kim Yun Hyok and Jo Yong Won who have special interest in physics and great creativity ranked high in the national exhibitions of juvenile sci-fi models and creations held last year and this year.

Kim built a model “universal deep-sea fishery base” which can contribute to the development of the nation’s fishing industry and Jo a model “underground farming” which can increase grain production by doing farming irrespective of seasons while saving land.

“I used to draw pictures in blank spaces of my notebook just for fun. My teacher saw them by chance and put me in the fine art group saying that I have a talent for art,” said Yu Song, a junior first-year student.

His sketches depicting their happy life are popular among the students.

Jang So Yon, who is now a student of Pyongyang Teachers Training College, wrote a child-poem “Bellied wardrobe” in her days at Pyongyang Middle School for Orphans reflecting her pleasure of receiving new clothes every season under the loving care of the respected fatherly Marshal Kim Jong Un. It is said to be one of the favourite poems of students of the school even now.

So far, the school has won first places at several national school contests and sports games of middle schools for orphans and has been highly appreciated at national sculpture and craftwork festivals and calligraphy festivals.

As the orphaned children grew up receiving more love of the Party than others, they have a strong determination to return the favours, said the principal, proudly adding that all graduates of the school are adding brilliance to their youth at the posts for national defence, universities and colleges and major sites of socialist construction.
