Day of world population

July 11, 2026

July 11 is World Population Day.

As the number of world population reached five billion on July 11, 1987, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) set the day as World Population Day at its executive council meeting in 1989.

Marking the day every year, the UNFPA presents themes for its activities, and calls on all countries of the world to conduct various activities by mapping out policies for coping with the population change proactively and effectively and implementing them.

At present, the most serious population problem facing the world is a record low drop of the birthrate.

This is affected by different socio-economic conditions and environmental factors that have gone through historical changes, but what is more important is that a fundamental change has taken place in the world outlook of the young generations who are directly linked to the birthrate.

Economic burden, lack of social investment in the young people and others make them feel reluctant to get married and to have the wanted number of child even after they married. According to a survey by the UNFPA in 2025, most of young people wanted to have over two children, but such economic problems as financial instability, unstable jobs and housing and increasing expense for bringing up children force them to have less children or give up having them.

This year, the UNFPA conducted a survey of about a hundred thousand people, aged between 18 and 39, in 73 countries around the world.

The organization called on the young people to pay due attention to the social concern related to the population problem and the countries to respect their hopes and aspirations and increase investment to them so as to achieve sustainable development.

In the DPRK, young people, as masters of social development and pioneers of the future, are bringing their hopes and aspirations to reality.

The problem related with the position and role of the young people have become an important policy-oriented issue of the state, and under the great affection and trust of the Party and country young people are adding brilliance to their youth.

Meanwhile, the young people are provided with stabilized socio-economic environment so that they can take free and purposeful choices in marrying and bringing up children, and the state reinforces measures for giving preferential treatment to the young people and in particular the families who bring up many children, and guarantees their implementation by law.

Thanks to the state’s policy of attaching importance to the young people, a promising future is in store for the country.
