African countries call for getting ready to cope with El Nino

August 6, 2026

A member of the Commission of the African Union called on its member nations to make preparations to cope with El Nino in a meeting related to the climate issue on July 30.

El Nino is expected to be the most violent this year since 1950, he said, adding that many regions of the continent might face such crises as food and water shortage and the outbreak of infectious diseases due to severe drought, destructive flood and lasting heat wave.

This is not a future possibility but an immediate crisis, he said, stressing that decisive and joint action is needed to cope with the crisis.
