Natural monument—Jasan ginkgo tree
August 8, 2026The Jasan ginkgo tree grows in Jasan-ri, Phyongsong, South Phyongan Province.
Planted in about 1280, it is a female ginkgo tree which looks magnificent as its height and the width of its crown are similar.
It is 26 metres tall, 6.8 metres round at the root collar, 5.5 metres round at the chest and 23 metres wide at the crown.
Its trunk is greyish brown and has many cracks.
A leaf is 5-6cm wide and 3-4cm long, characterized by its being smaller than those of other ginkgoes and being not bisected at the tip.
The tree is of great scientific significance as it is hundreds of years old.
It was designated as a natural monument in January 1980 to be put under protection.
