River improvement is very important in preventing flood damage.

According to the relevant sector, the rainy season of this year will start slightly earlier than normal year and two or three typhoons will directly or indirectly affect the DPRK between July and September.

Therefore, river improvement projects are under way in different parts of the country.

Cities and counties of North Phyongan Province are expanding successes in such projects by concentrating efforts and means on them.

Sakju County dredged huge sections of rivers and streams and covered their banks with stones so as to raise the water passage capacities of those in the township area. Unsan County has steadily expanded success after undertaking millions of cubic metres of dredging and tens of kilometres of earth piling on banks.

Many areas and units including Kilju County of North Hamgyong Province, Yodok County of South Hamgyong Province, Sinphyong County of North Hwanghae Province and Munchon City of Kangwon Province are pushing ahead with similar projects.

Kilju County has directed efforts into dredging to increase passage amount of water as compared to before. Yodok and Sinphyong counties have built more solid embankments to be unaffected even by lots of heavy rain.

Unchon County of South Hwanghae Province has concentrated efforts on improving a river flowing into the Taedong River this year in keeping with the actual conditions of the area adjoining two large rivers. On the basis of numerical calculations of not only the amount and rate of its flowing water but the pressure on the embankment, the county increased the width of the river and dredged it. It also made sure that the embankment was built up with more importance attached to its durability than to its height so as to make it possible to actually remove the risk factors of flood damage that remained partially in sections of the river.

Four medium and small rivers were improved in Jonchon County of Jagang Province.

The county increased the width of the rivers and dredged them deeply in consideration of its natural and climatic conditions. And Rangnim County completed the building of tens of kilometres of river embankments.

Many other areas are also pushing forward with the improvement of major rivers.
