Most important state affair

August 13, 2026

There was an occasion which made our educators realize their responsibility and duty once again.

When some areas of our country including North Phyongan and Jagang provinces suffered serious flood damage in July 2024, the respected General Secretary Kim Jong Un put in operation an emergency system whereby all the children in the stricken areas including students were brought to Pyongyang to be provided with nursing and education in a safe and convenient environment.

At that time, people paid attention only to the living of flood victims and rehabilitation, failing to care about education for children. We, educators, and parents of students also regarded the temporary suspension of education caused by natural disaster as unavoidable.

However, though he was very busy guiding state affairs and rehabilitation, the General Secretary paid close attention to the education of students in the afflicted areas and took detailed measures to provide them with educational conditions.

As a result, temporary classrooms were arranged at the April 25 Hostel in which flood victims stayed and a mobile educational group was formed with competent teachers of primary and middle schools and preschool educational institutions in Pyongyang.

The General Secretary looked round the temporary classrooms one by one at the hostel, inspected a demonstration lesson and examined in detail the state of provision of educational equipment and school fixtures and school things for students.

I was deeply moved at that time.

I grasped afresh the meaning that education is the most important state affair and keenly realized once again my duty as one of officials in charge of education in the country.

Now a great deal of achievements are being made in the education work.

But we have much more to do and should make much more effort in order to implement the intention of the General Secretary.

Therefore, our officials in the education sector continue to make strenuous efforts to implement the policies of the Workers’ Party of Korea and the government which regard education as the most important state affair to which priority should be given and which requires greatest energy at any time and stage and the most responsible and important undertaking that should make steady progress without a day’s halt.
