Physical acrobatics wins three prizes again
August 18, 2026The World Festival of Circus Art “Idol-2026” took place in Moscow, Russia, from May 30 to June 7.
The festival brought together excellent acrobats from 12 countries including the DPRK. At the festival, the DPRK’s physical acrobatics “Wire Rope Walking” was awarded the Grand Prize, the highest prize of the festival, and audience evaluation and mass media gold prizes.
At the physical acrobatics “Wire Rope Walking”, the DPRK acrobats were acclaimed by the audience for the wonderful stunts, including jumping over four persons they performed on an 8-metre-high wire rope without safety equipment.
In 2018, the acrobatics received the Idol gold prize, the highest prize of the festival, and audience evaluation and mass media gold prizes at the World Festival of Circus Art “Idol-2018”, thus becoming the first work that won three gold prizes as one acrobatic piece in the history of the festival. At that time, the DPRK acrobats reportedly performed such stunts as jumping over three persons and a backward somersault on a 6-metre-high wire rope without safety equipment.
Rim Un Il, one of the acrobats, said, “We chose this number again as we wanted to make it reflect the triumphant spirit of our people who are vigorously advancing under the leadership of the Party.”
The acrobats intensified training to perfect the number consisting of more daring movements.
They trained on the ground at first before completing the movements one by one on a wire rope while increasing its height gradually.
It is said that the most difficult movement was jumping over four persons on a wire rope.
It was not as easy as they had thought to be to jump over four persons while balancing on a wire rope. Whenever the acrobat jumping over the four sitting persons touched even one of them, they would all drop.
But the acrobats drew lessons from failures and steadily practised to finally complete the number.
It evoked a great response from the jury and spectators.
The chairman of the festival organizing committee warmly congratulated the DPRK acrobats for their performance of the best work beyond the expectations of all, and a Peruvian international referee and the president of the Spanish fund for circus art referred to the DPRK’s acrobatics as the best and said that they wanted to invite its acrobats to the circus festivals to be held in their countries.
The general director of the Chinese national acrobatic gymnastics troupe expressed his sincere congratulations on the fact that the DPRK’s physical acrobatics “Wire Rope Walking” was awarded the highest prize, hoping that the Korean acrobatics would achieve successes amazing the world acrobatic circles.
